"Unacceptable wait for blood tests"

About: King George Hospital

I went to King George blood test department today at 1pm.and took number 378 from the machine. I the noticed that the phlebotomy department was serving number 333 so I waited and waited. After 15 minutes they were on number 335. The waiting area was packed and there were no seats so I left. This is not the first time I have experienced an unacceptable wait. On the last occasion I waited for 1hr and 40mins and the time before was about the same length. It doesn't seem to matter what time you arrive the wait is always far too long and unacceptable for patients who feel ill. On the previous occasion I asked the lady who took my blood why the wait was so long and she said....' because there are too many people'...... I tried to explain that this wasn't a reasonable answer. The answer is..... there are too few phlebotomists for the number of patients at that time and therefore the service is badly managed. Perhaps management could ask the Royal Free how to improve the service. There the average wait is in minutes. Many friends complain about the blood test service at both King George and Queens. Both need to be improved dramatically. The service is very, very, poor.

Thanks for taking the time to leave your comment. Our blood test department at King George is an incredibly busy service as serving one of the largest areas of London and Essex. I am sorry that you’ve experienced a long wait on several occasions. Our phlebotomy team is working hard to keep waiting times to a minimum and we are working with our commissioners to help this service. Yours sincerely, Stephen Burgess Medical Director
