16/1/14 arrived by ambulance on a trolley ,unable enter A&E due to the fact that so many paramedics,and patients blocking the entrance ,All three automated entrance doors open to the elements. The care after this bottle neck was very good ,the staff in ward 8 excellent.

Dear P Blackshaw, Thank you for your positive comments - I am glad to hear you felt the care you received was very good. We are working on sorting out the bottleneck you so correctly observed. You may have heard of our long term plans for a bigger Emergency Department with more space. Over the medium term, we are experimenting with different ways of weekend working and how that affects the flow of patients from ambulance to Emergency Department and then to the admitting wards throughout the week too (I appreciate your visit was during the week but what we are learning from these 'super' weekend trials will apply across all seven days). Over the short term unfortunately, we may well have some more difficult days ahead with similar bottlenecks. Especially if the weather turns colder. As a hospital, we will continue to focus our efforts on providing good care and improving the patient journey as best we can. We also appreciate the support from GPs, dentists, pharmacists, urgent care centres, minor injury units and all those who provide alternatives to the Emergency Department - their efforts have a big impact on reducing bottlenecks at the A&E entrance.
