I have had quite a few surgical procedures carried out over the past two years and have to say that to my mind the food is absolutely disgusting. I have spent almost six months in hospital over the past few years and I have had to rely on family members bringing food in at visiting times.

For example on one occasion I was admitted to the Western Infirmary with an abscess in my abdomen which burst resulting in septicaemia. I was offered a curry pie for dinner as apparently there was nothing else available at the time. After all of the money our government has been spending advertising healthy eating and healthy lifetstyle, not once in my experience have I been offered a piece of fresh fruit or a yoghurt or anything which has the remote touch of colour in it. Something needs to be done about this urgently.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has invested significant funding into providing a better experience for patients through its food delivery across all sites in the last few years.

We try to ensure that the patient experience at mealtimes contains choices that will meet expectations. Three main courses are available at each lunch and dinner service time, with a varying palatable mix. This is supplemented with a light bite menu which includes a sandwich or snack alternative to the main meal choice as well as ward pantry's being stocked with provisions such as bread and biscuit products. Yogurts and fruit are available on the menu each day and are also available on request from catering so we are disappointed to hear that you were not offered them.

It is very disappointing to hear that your experience with various hospital stays resulted in a unsatisfactory meal experience but can assure you that these alternative options are available to all in patients in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. We will highlight with ward colleagues the catering information pack which is available on each ward to make sure patients get offered the full range of our choices.

As well as this, a full complaints procedure is in place, nursing staff on wards should be contacted directly if you have any future problems and a member of the Catering Management team will follow up and find a solution within your hospital stay.
