Over the past few months I have visited RUH's A&E department a number of times due to a ongoing medical issue. The first few times I visited I was amazed how quickly I was treated and how incredibly friendly the nurses were however my last visit to the unit over shadowed any positive experiences I have had at RUH. I was treated by a nurse practitioner in the 'minors' area who made a number of negative comments about my visit to the hospital and when my treatment was unsuccessful (I had a orthopedic injury) I was made to feel it was my fault. I was left for well over an hour stranded on my bed face down in a position the doctor had asked me take. I ended up having to ask my friend who was with me to help me only to be told off like a child that I should not be getting out of bed as "the department was too busy to deal with people like me". I asked for an explanation but the nurse in question walked off, leaving her colleague behind who did say sorry to me "for her colleagues outburst". After spending a further half an hour being ignored the doctor decided to take me into majors to continue my treatment. I was then admitted as the A&E team could not resolve the issue. I was taken to a mixed sex ward ladies (in their 80s) down one side and males down the other. I felt very uneasy about being in a mixed sex ward and shared by fears with a nurse who told me to wait until day time nurses arrived. When the day team arrived they said there was nothing they could do. In 2014 I would expect more from a hospital the size of RUH.
