"A & E and Ward 20"

About: Bradford Royal Infirmary

My 79 yr old mother-in-law with Non Hodgkinson Lymphona was admitted to A & E because of rectal bleed at 5.30pm. She was eventually assessed at approx 7.00pm, bloods were taken and we were informed she may need a transfusion but would know when res were back. Sometime later she experienced at Angina attack it was a good job family were with her so we could attend to her needs as she was unable to summons help herself. Later we were told she would need a transfusion. At approx 10.30pm she was taken to ward 20 were she was put into an assessment bay we were told sahe would have to wait a long while as the doctor was busy and a patient who arrived at 8.00pm had still not been assessed. I told them I thought this was unacceptable due to her age and condition I was told there was nothing anyone could do. Eventually at about 11.45pm she was assessed by a dr. Upon reading her A & E notes he wanted us to confirm she had been given a blood transfusion she had not but A & E documented she had! They also failed to document she had had an Angina attack. We were also informed there was no bed available and she would have to stay in the assessment cubicle until a bed became available. At 12.30am we left the hospital as we were becoming upset and angry at the way a person of her age with cancer was treated. I await your comments
