What I liked

on arrival to the emergency room with my baby who had been referred we were seen very quickly - probably due to the severity of her condition. However the staff were fantastic and I felt that everything that could be done was being done. When my daughter was admitted the staff in the children's ward were really attentive and understanding of two very worried parents (and rest of the family). I cannot praise them enough.

What could be improved

Cleaning of equipment and handwashing - you should not have to ask staff to wash their hands - it should be second nature. Also the cot was not cleaned well - there was lots of dust sitting on it!

Anything else?

I think it is important to give positive feedback as well as here improvements can be made.

Thank you for your kind comments, which have been passed on to the A&E and children’s teams at the Lister.

We are sorry that you were not satisfied with the standards of cleaning and hand hygiene you experienced within the children’s unit. We have highlighted your concerns with the team, which is looking in to them. That said, however, we always encourage anyone who is not satisfied with they hygiene and cleanliness standards they observe to raise these issues with either the senior nurse in charge of that clinical area, or with the duty matron. Both are well placed to respond to such concerns quickly, sorting them out where a problem is uncovered.

The Trust has a comprehensive infection control strategy in place that has led to a dramatic fall in the level of healthcare-associated infections over the last 12-18 months (for instance MRSA bacteraemias have virtually been halved and infections caused by Clostridium difficile dropping even faster. While this is very welcome news, especially for our patients and their families, we continue to work to combat the threat these bacteria and other organisms pose. This includes campaigning actively on the importance of staff, patients and visitors cleaning their hands – and of patients asking our staff if they have done this prior to examining and/or treating them.
