I reported in my review of the 31st Dec that I was due to have the above procedure carried out on 6th Jan, well I reported to ward 4 at the due time and was greeted by nursing staff who were not yet on duty but non the less settled me onto the ward ready for the day to begin. I was then taken through a number of checks to ensure I was OK for the procedure to be carried out, following the checks I was transferred to the operating theatre and met with the surgical nursing staff who first of all put me at ease while explaining the steps that would follow. I then met the surgeon who was to carry out the procedure and again made to feel totally at ease, I am delighted to report that everything went fantastically well and following a period in the recovery room was transferred back to ward 4. Despite the ward being extremely busy I was looked after by all the nursing staff both during the dayshift and the nightshift tremendously well, even when attending other patients the staff would in passing ask 'are you OK, is there anything you need'. Belief me at a time when you feel very anxious, nervous and outside your comfort zone the level of professionalism and care that automatically comes across is to say the least very comforting. The pacemaker procedure has been successful and I already have a follow up appointment in 4 weeks to check I am still wired OK, again the staff on the cardiology dept. fully explained what the pacemaker would do, how I would be monitored and what to avoid (magnetic escalators etc.) Thank you all so much for looking after me and I would have no hesitation of recommending STDH to anyone in the future.
