I was admitted in great pain at 11pm on New Y's Day and with diabetic issues as well. I was placed under the surgical team throughout and was involved in all discussions with the Registrar/SHO's. Ward G2 & C4 being transitionary wards they obviously have a rapid turnover of patients, so food is not perhaps as available as on a regular ward. To be offered last Thursday evening a packet of crisps, a packet of sandwiches and an Ambrosia rice pudding was an insult. If I had taken my evening insulin of 60 units on that inadequate amount of food (!) I would have been seriously ill in the night, therefore giving staff problems. I feel that a lot of the quality of the food is poor, and I would like to hear from the Catering Manager how much exactly is spent per patient meal episode. The presentation on some plates was attrocious. Things improved when I went to D6 & got on the ordering system in my own right, but there is no tick section for Diabetics.I know what I am doing, but a new diabetic, particularly if elderly, would not be helped by the menu. Also stating in large letters "One option only" is not necessarily enough food for an evening meal on night time insulin.I did write over that and fortunately someone in Catering sent up sandwiches and a salad and soup. The salads seem very well presented and appealing. The soups also were good and though I suspected they were "packet" they didn't taste powdery. Having worked in the NHS with involvement through management offices in various departments, I know that Catering have a particularly tricky time and that there is quite a bit of food wasted. I wonder if though in-house own cooked food with more variety would help.Chef James Martin from TV recently worked in 2 hospitals with a similar catering budget and one bought all produce in, packeted, tinned etc whilst the other had more fresh options and variety which was more acceptable to patients. If food is unappetising and slopped on the plate, swimming in gravy and with large mounds of mashed potates it doesn't encourage people to eat. Would appreciate a reply.
