"Poor all round"

About: Chesterfield Royal Hospital

I have had three different experiences of Chesterfield Royal over the past three years. None of which have been good. The first involved a clinician who was consistently late for appointments, strolled in and stank of smoke. The second involved a hospital stay where I witnessed a blind lady with respiratory problems left with a bed pan and crying out in obvious pain. When the other patients on the ward made one of the ward staff aware they just said they would leave her until she used her buzzer.. which she obviously couldn't. Within said stay I was also given the all clear to leave but still made to wait three hours to be discharged. Worrying when it was made quite obvious they were short of beds when I was first admitted. My most recent dealings with the Royal have been what has made me write this review. I was referred to Neurology by my GP 1st July and did not receive any news of an appointment until November. The actual appointment was 19.5 weeks after being referred - obviously outside of the 18 week standard. The letter I received my appointment on did not actually state anywhere on it that it was at Chesterfield Royal - which made me decide to contact the Advice centre and log a complaint. Regarding the waiting times all they said was that they were aware (and never answered my query as to what the consequence was for the department) and I was informed that all letters were sent on headed paper which clearly states where the appointment is at.. I'm not stupid and the letter was not on headed paper. I offered to send a copy if wished but this was turned down and my concern apparently forwarded to the appointments service. At my appointment I was referred to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals for an MRI scan. The contrast in service was apparent straight away. They had me in just over a week later for the scan, the staff were polite and helpful and I was reassured that my results would be sent back within two weeks. Here I sit five weeks later having made a second complaint to the advice centre because although I have been informed that my results are with the Dr by his secretary - nothing has been done with them and I still am none the wiser as to what my condition is. In fact in the last two weeks it has worsened considerably and my GP has had to prescribe stronger painkillers which affect me working due to the side affects. Trying to get through to the hospital on its main number is impossible - out 12 times of trying it has been answered once. I therefore emailed them using their online enquiry form and was given a number for neurology.. minus 2 digits. I myself am an NHS worker and with the current focus on patient experience I do not see that the service I received from Chesterfield Royal was acceptable and I would be loathed to be referred to them in the future.
