"A & E - 08/01/13"

About: Stafford Hospital

I was admitted to A&E after having severe agonising abdominal pain and vomiting blood. I was advised by NHS direct to go to A&E based on my symptoms. There were three ambulance men who picked me up and they assessed me at home. One of the ambulance men did not think that my symptoms were severe enough to have called an ambulance and sAid that i could stop at home. But my pain was so bad i insisted on going to A&E. the whole journey he wasnt very nice and made out that i was wasting their time, which was a shame because my pain was so disabling it was agony and it was not me who called the ambulance it was NHS direct. When first arriving i waited in the waiting area to see the nurse to be assessed. I did not have to wait long to be seen. The nurse and student nurse who assessed me, were both friendly, caring and reassuring. They made me feel like i wasnt wasting their time and the nurse reassured me that my case was serious enough to have called an ambulance and that they would run tests and find out what the problem was, and make me better. I felt so cared for during a scary time for me. The nurse then found me a bed in A&E department and helped make me comfortable. She then passed me on to the A&E team. I was then seen by the nurses and the healthcare assistant who took blood, gave me a cannula and an ECG from me, the whole time doing it quickly, as painlessly and as comfortably as possible. I was soon after seen by a doctor. The doctor spent a lot of his time and patience asking me questions to find out what happened. He then thoroughly explained what he thought the cause was, what they were going to do and the possible plan of action on his assessment. The whole time he was reassuring and listened to me, what i thought and what i wanted. The tests came back clear and the doctors assessment was right. He gave me some anti sickness medication as well as i was sick a couple of times. He explained the plan of action and gave me a prescription. I then went home feeling a millions times better and pain free. I could not have wished for better healthcare professionals to be looking after me. I have been to a different hospital many times before and this one was the best one i have ever been to. I am so grateful for the wonderful, hardworking staff who gave me the best possible patient cared care they really deserve more recognition.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with this feedback which I will share with the A&E team. I am delighted to hear that you received such excellent care and reassurance during this very frightening time. Comments like yours really do make a difference to our staff who are working very hard, often in difficult services, to ensure the care they provide is to the standard they would expect for themselves and their families. Kind Regards Angela Grocott Head of Patient Experience
