In a mixed affective episode with strong suicidal thoughts I was admitted onto Bluebell Ward, Prospect Park. As I’m sure you’ll appreciate spending Christmas Day and New Years Eve away from my family and on a mental health hospital ward was never one of my life’s ambitions! However staff helped make the dread of a hospital admission that little bit easier to accept. Their generosity of spirit, the thought and consideration that went into the ward Christmas party, made it one of those special days that will stay with me forever. With regard to treatment, I never felt patronised and I felt included on all discussions about medication and my recovery. Staff also made time to help me look at and understand my emotions when they were getting overwhelming. They gave me a real safety net at a time when I was confused, fearful and in a very bleak place. They helped me find a better sense of perspective, take the power out of the distressing thoughts and especially important for me helped me keep hold of my sense of humour. They are an exceptional team and I will never forget the support they gave me. My stay has been both life saving and life changing. I have left in a much better place – feeling well and motivated to start to approach life in a more realistic yet still fulfilling way!
