"Colposcopy and cold coagulation therapy"

About: Queen Alexandra Hospital

The detection and treatment regime for the high grade abnormal cells found on my cervix was fantastic. Within 4 days of my initial smear with my GP I received a letter from QA requesting I make an urgent appointment for a colposcopy, with an explanation of what the appointment would entail. I was unable to make the appointment slots available, and after some immediate concern, I was redirected to the nurse in charge, who within 24hrs had arranged an out of hours appointment with the consultant for me on a Saturday to ensure I received the appropriate care. The staff were friendly and non-intimidating. The consultant discussed the removal of abnormal cells procedure with me in a jargon free form and was able to competently answer my questions about the implications/benefits of treatment and any effects the procedure might have on future conception and fertility. The removal of cells was done during the same appointment which I was very happy about as my level of anxiety was high. It was pain free, though un-comfortable; my dignity was intact at all times and the staff were comforting and respectful (I don't enjoy talking when I'm feeling anxious; I told the HCSW this and she quietly held my hand during the procedure to try and ease my discomfort). I was given clear information about duration of recovery, signs of infection and when I would be contacted again with results and my next date for review. Overall I was very satisfied with the speed, efficiency and treatment provided by Queen Alexandra Hospital and all staff I encountered. I have since been able to share my story with other friends who have too had abnormal smear results and been able to ease some of their anxieties about the condition, the treatment and the care provided by QAH. Thank you very much.

Thank you for sharing your positive experience of what could have been a very daunting and worrying time.
