"Ward 9 Orthopaedics - Total knee replacement 28..."

About: Fairfield General Hospital

Pre Operative Care Very good, I had a list of questions/anxieties which were all addressed and gave me confidence in the procedure. Staff were empathic and understanding. Scheduling Department I had a few initial problems which were addressed and resolved satisfactorily. Very efficient regarding appointments etc. Nursing Staff At a time, when there had been much in the media about poor nursing care in some areas of the country, I can only describe my care as very good, professional and caring.I was kept informed about what was happening and treated with dignity, respect and good humour. I was particularly impressed by the younger, recently qualified staff I met. The only downside was the male newspaper vendor who pushed his head through the curtains when I was in a state of undress. One of the nurses commented on this. Cleanliness From what I saw on Ward 9 standards were high. One petite G4S cleaner I noticed just never stopped cleaning, even when she came to talk to me, cloth in hand she was still cleaning. She seemed proud of her role. Food/Catering Excellent. Home made spicey tomato soup, crisp fresh ham salad, fillet of salmon in sauce. Thinking of the numbers involved, I don't know how they did it. Consultant/Medical Team Superb, kept me well informed. Addressed concerns and anxieties. Inspired confidence. Elastic stockings and anti coagulant injections supplied to administer at home. Anaesthetics This aspect frightened me most. The team were supportive and kept me well informed about what was going on. I requested a spinal injection, with minimal sedation. I felt supported at all times. Post Operative Care Had one to one care in the recovery room. Member of staff was attentive and supportive. Physiotherapy Plenty of support soon after operation. Every member of this team were professional and well informed. When I got home I had concerns about some exercises I was temporarily unable to do, it was explained why I was having these problems. Occupational Therapy Aid supplied for toilet promptly before discharge. Dealing with a subsequent issue could have been better, two phone calls not returned. District Nurses Came when they said they would. Full of useful information and advice. Had a problem with getting surgical clips removed but this was promptly sorted by Week End nurse. On the whole, very good Summary I felt that I was given "The Very Best of Care". It was particularly encouraging to meet younger members of staff who were keen and enthusiastic.
