"Not impressed"

About: Royal Oldham Hospital

I was admitted to the ante natal ward for an induction of labour on a sunday morning. Hooked up to monitor and forgotten about whilst midwife was on lunch break, despite her asking colleagues to keep an eye on me. Having mild contractions by 6pm, worsening by 8pm and needing pain relief by 9pm. Informed midwife behind desk, they said night team were coming in 'soon' and would examine me. Went back onto the ward and contractions were unbearable, was pressing emergency call button for 45 minutes and no midwives came. I was coached through labour by a lovely auxilliary nurse and other patients on the ward as my partner had been sent home. I was told there was a staff changeover going on and that midwives wouldn't be long. By the time a midwife came at 9.45pm I was ready to push, and was hooked up to a monitor and examined whilst the birth centre was contacted. Any further delay and I would have given birth on the ante natal ward. I do not understand why I was not more closely monitored after my labour had been induced, especially as this was my second baby therefore a faster labour. I had also been told earlier in the day that under no circumstances would gas and air be available on the ward, which caused me distress as I was denied this in my first labour also and given pethidine instead (at fairfield hosp) however luckily I was provided with a mobile entonox cylinder at around 10pm. Why cause unneccessary worry? The care I received in the birth centre itself was fantastic, I just wish I could say the same for the ante natal ward.
