My mother, 94 years old suffering dementia and incontinent was sent by ambulance on Thursday 2nd Jan to the hospital for assessment. She was admitted to a ward where various tests performed and discharged the following day at lunchtime. The care home where she lives spoke to the hospital twice during the afternoon and was informed that there was a delay with transport until mid afternoon but she would be discharged that day. My mother arrived at her care home (10 minutes away from the hospital) at 10.30pm. It was freezing cold but she was only wearing a hospital gown, was disorientated, hungry thirsty and soiled. I am disgusted at the lack of care shown. When the delay in transport was established the care home or the next of kin were not informed. Private transport could have been arranged. Why was my mother not dressed properly before being sent out into the night air and why was she not escorted and assisted to the bathroom whilst in the building. How can it be that an ambulance was not available for 9-10 hours. There were no major incidents reported on the news for the area. Princess Alexandra Hospital has both a care problem and an organisational problem. Let's hope there is never an emergency. I will be reporting this incident to the Trust.
