I was suffering from increasing breathlessness over some months but during a holiday abroad in April this worsened and I also started suffering from swollen legs.
On my return I visited the GP who suspected a heart problem. I was put on diuretics to reduce the fluid in my lungs and legs.
Numerous tests followed at the Northern General Hospital which confirmed the need for a replacement aortic valve.
The operation was performed by Mr. Briffa in October, by which time my condition had worsened.
However, from the minute that I came round from the operation, I felt the improvement despite the expected usual problems resulting from it.
Three months later all seems to be going to plan and the operation has saved my life.
I have nothing but praise for my treatment at the Northern General. I was treated as a customer rather than a patient. I am grateful to the entire team.
One aspect which maybe could have been discussed more was the loss of weight following the operation. Ceasing the diuretics and the return of my appetite has subsequently helped and I am returning to normal.
