"Poor standard of care"

About: Pinderfields General Hospital

Anything else?

My partner was recently admitted to Pinderfields hospital with suspected meningitis. He was on a medical assessment ward whilst varying tests were carried out to determine a diagnosis. During his admission, his temperature peaked at 38.8. Myself and his mother are both nurses; aware that we needed to bring his temperature down immediately - therefore, we stripped his bed sheets to the bare minimum, undressed him, continuously applied cold compresses to his forehead. No nurses returned to check on him once they had recorded his temperature despite the severity of his fever. Nobody made any effort to bring his temperature down - where has basic nursing care gone? I dread to think how it must be for families with no nursing background who may be unaware of how to assist their relatives. He was asked to supply a urine sample for immediate testing. He did this in the provided urine bottles when he was able to. I informed a nursing staff member that the sample was ready. Nobody collected this, we waited for one hour, before I took it upon myself to stand in the corridor holding the urine bottle out, waiting for someone to take it from us. When we had to leave my partner overnight, a highly distressing time for us as we felt he was unsafe to be left in what should be the "safest place" for him at this time. We returned in the morning, his bed sheets were dirtied with blood stains (his canula, which had fallen out the night before - reportedly at 11pm my partner informed me.) He also had urine stains across the sheets as he had been too weak to support himself in safely disposing of the urine bottle and had spilt it. Nobody had thought to change his sheets, so upon arriving the next day, I was horrified to see the mess he was laid in. To their credit some of the nursing staff and doctors were helpful. However, the overall experience was distressing. I would be reluctant to take a family member to Pinderfields in the future.
