""Rehab" is the wrong word for this ward."

About: King's College Hospital (Denmark Hill)

Anything else?

There is not enough rehab for the elderly on this ward. Not enough staff. There is no stimulation for the patient which is crucial for them getting better (many dementia and other mental health conditions). Rehab to this ward means going to toilet and coming back. One of the dementia elderly patients fell becuase she was left unsupervised. Luckily I was there to catch her. The staff are demorilised. This is not much more than a general ward for the elderly. More intensive physio and OT required. At present a walk to the toilet twice a day is what is considered intensive. Putting in some investments in the begining and them staying in longer means they go home stronger and not come in again. Too many getting discharged too early. The carer's input not considered. Medical team make decisions too early. Most of the staff mean well but they are only human. This is a production line of elderly on a conveybelt. Some of the staff have become institutionally blinded by their shortcomings. On the service all seems well...but the record keeping and staff/dr's reading medical notes too rushed and perhaps not accurate.

I am sorry that you failed to receive a more prompt response to the concerns you have raised. All of the wards in our hospital have significant numbers of elderly patients and therefore for us to be able to act to address the concerns you raise about an individual ward it would be very helpful to know which ward you are describing. If you could email our PALS service with that detail we will be able to liase directly with the relevant medical, therapy and nursing teams. Our email contact is kch-tr.pals@nhs.net
