"Wait in A and E"

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital

Anything else?

Brought mum in on advice of 111 after waiting all day for advice and help to deal with leaking ileostomy , burning skin - when asked if mum could lie down after waiting almost 2hours - was told there are no beds in the hospital. Mum has been 95o/o bedridden for 18 months and needs to lie down as sitting makes leaking worse . I wasn't even allowed to explain this properly and told that we has to wait with sitting in wheelchair that took 2hours to get her into . Patient care ? I didn't ask for her to be seen 'now' - just allowed to lie down !

Please accept our sincere apologies for your recent experience in the ED department. Unfortunately the ED has been under huge pressure for beds and it is possible that at the time of request we physically did not have beds to lie your mum down. However, the nurse should have taken the time to explain this properly to you so that you could understand our reasons for not being able to meet your request. The matron for the area will ensure the staff are reminded to ensure that patients and relatives are fully aware of the situation we are under so that all parties appreciate the pressures we are working with and that they take time to ensure we do as much as we can to ensure patient comfort.
