"Lack of dental services over the Christmas period"

About: NHS Redditch and Bromsgrove CCG Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust

(as a relative),

I was shocked and appalled at the lack of dental services available over the Christmas period. In fact there were NONE!

My husband was in a considerable amount of pain and desperatley needed to see a dentist on Christmas Day. Only for us to discover that there was NO dental provison open (even for emergencies) on Christmas Day!

Shame on you Worcestershire NHS Trust!

Between us we phoned every hospital between here and Manchester and down as far a Bristol in the hope that someone could help him - they couldn't.

Thankfully we managed to find a private dental surgery open on Boxing day, and tahnkfully my husband was seen and the abses and tooth were removed.

I was under the impression that you as an NHS Trsut had a duty of care to provide Heatlh Care services to members of the public 365 days a year? We certainly didn't expect a dentist to be open, but surely you should have had an emergency dentist on call?

Now here's the real shaming fact Worcestershire NHS Trust - our local Vet was on call!

I am sorry that your husband needed to see a dentist on Christmas Day. NHS England provides an emergency service at Lowesmoor dental access centre Worcester, Kidderminster and Evesham from 9.00. - 12.00 on bank holidays and weekends.I have just confirmed that these clinics were open and working on Christmas Day.

Thank you for advising us of your problem as it has highlighted a need for us to provide more appropriate advice for patients and the public as to the whereabouts of our dental emergency services.

I shall be discussing this issue with my colleagues and hope to address this issue in the next few months. If you are able to give me more details of your experience this could be very helpful. Please email me on Janet.hayes-hall@nhs.net.

Thank you
