Anything else?
I had to undergo an operation at the day surgery department on 16th December. I was absolutely terrified and by the time I was booked in I was actually shaking and very emotional. The nurse was very sympathetic and reassured me that they would take good care of me....and they did! I had a terrible fear about the whole procedure but the anaesthetic was a huge worry for me. When the anaesthesiologist came to see me before the surgery, I explained my fears and he explained what was going to happen and he realised that despite his reassurance, I was still very frightened. This lovely man then said that he would arrange for me to have my operation first to avoid me waiting in terror, and also agreed to allow my husband to accompany me to the theatre. He was true to his word and I went to theatre first accompanied by my husband. All of the nursing staff were wonderful. They even allowed me to wear my own underwear into surgery because it made me more comfortable! Nothing was too much trouble for anyone, and the whole time I was made to feel respected, informed and cared for. Yes there was a lot of waiting around but I honestly can't find any fault with anyone or anything at the day surgery. Everything was clean. staff used hand gel every time they approached a patient. I had my drip leaking blood all over my gown and bed. The lovely nurse cleaned both me and the bed immediately, while taking into account that I had just come round from surgery and wasn't exactly able to help. She treated me with respect and maintained my dignity throughout. I think that, thanks to their care and nurturing, this operation was nowhere near as traumatic as I thought it was going to be. Thank you to you all. You are a credit to Derby Hospital and the nursing profession.
