I went into the Freeman for an elective keyhole hernia repair. The pre-op staff and the anaesthetist were lovely. I was only supposed to stay in for the afternoon of the operation but they said my oxygen levels had dropped too much and I was too difficult to wake from the drugs so they opted to keep me in overnight. The ward staff were very friendly and attentive and worked hard all night. They took regular swabs for MRSA on both me and the bed, chair and table. The bed and everything was cleaned in the morning and the toilet was very clean also. I was visited by my consultant surgeon and the recovery team, which seemed to mostly be students to see how I was. If felt a bit angry that the doctor leading the recovery team did not seem to beleive me when I mentioned about the pain and tightness in my chest. It was only the surgeon who told me that it was from the gas used to insufflate the chest cavity during surgery. The shouldertip pain and trouble breathing that I suffered from that was far worse than the pain from the surgery itself and I strongly recommend they switch to kinder methods of pneumoperitoneum, as verified through empirical findings, such as warming the gas and ensuring that the cavity is as deflated as possible before sealing the wounds. The surgeon actually performed the op, a lovely lady did a marvellous job with the repair and the stiching of the scars is incredibly neat.. Thank you to everyone. I honestly don't think there is a better hospital in the whole of the NHS.
