My mum (77) was admitted after she passed out at home, although her granddaughter was with her and told anyone that would listen, the doctors still got the wrong story. Even though I was straight down and visited her every other day, she has not been washed or changed. She fell again in the bathroom when she tried to help another lady who had been waiting for quite a while to go to the toilet. Mum was found on the floor, wet through, she was given a gown and sat on her chair and since then she has been found to have a hairline fracture of the spine, whether this happened on the first fall or the second, I don't know. I found her later sat cold and still shocked in the chair, no one came back. I then showered her, dressed her in warm pyjamas and tucked her in bed then told a nurse who asked why I was there after visiting time. She didn't know about her fall obviously it hadn't been discussed at the changeover. This nurse called a doctor who examined her, I found another blanket. The next day I told GP of my concerns, I found my mum without dinner and had to ask for it, she got left overs, one day she had a jug of water and no cup. Then a couple of days ago I found her slurring her speech, and very sleepy. I was shocked and told a nurse who said 'she looks alright to me, saw her smile', and walked away. As she wasn't interested I went and complained to the desk and a doctor was called, he examined her and she seemed to pass the stroke test although I know my mum says yes to everything, her face was different and her speech was bad. I left with my daughter and we both felt angry and upset by how we had found her. We went back later that day, the attitudes had changed the doctor came to see us and we explained our concerns, showed him a video of before my mum was admitted and he heard her voice clear, coherent teaching her grandson to juggle. He apologized for us been kept in the dark and answered all our questions, he said they would start new investigations the next day, which they did. She was put on stroke medication. The next day we saw her again, and today my daughter went and found her in the same dirty clothes and she had been told to go to the bathroom and wash herself, which she had tried to do. My daughter took her to the bathroom and changed her although neither of us dare shower her now. There are no tv’s and mum had sat there bored, lonely and confused. She said it was the worst stay in a hospital she had ever had, the nurses didn't speak or help her and she wanted to come home. I dread to think what could have happened if we hadn't gone that day. The doctor I saw was very good but the nursing care is atrocious. Since been in she has fell, she has now got a hairline fracture of the spine, she is confused and her speech is slurred and hesitant, she isn't the lady that she was before she was admitted, She has not been treated with dignity and I fear she has deteriorated badly since been in there and hope to get her out as soon as I can.
