"Appointment at Ayr Hospital"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Respiratory Medicine

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was given an appointment in July to attend the Respiratory Clinic as it was suspected she had sleep apnoea. Due to a cancellation by ourselves, due to illness, an appointment was finally set for 6. 30 in the evening.

As we live 30 miles from the hospital, travelling through rush hour traffic presents a real problem and took approx. an hour and a half by car. We arrived at reception at 6. 15 and my daughter was taken almost immediately to have her weight and height checked, and she was asked to complete a questionnaire.

We then sat until 7. 30 before she was called to see the doctor. After asking 3 questions, he said he did not believe she had sleep apnea, but would arrange for a test anyway. The consultation lasted less than 5 minutes.

The appointment time and consultation time were both wholly unacceptable, and after this experience, we have been left with less faith in the hospital which we always considered one of the best.

Dear rolypom

Thank you for using Patient Opinion and please accept my apologies for not responding sooner to your posting.

I am sorry that the 6.30pm appointment time married with your 30 mile journey was not a positive combination. I know how frustrating rush hour traffic can be. If in the future your appointment time issued falls at this time, please do get back in touch with our appointments team and they will endeavour to give you a more suitable appointment time.

I am also sorry that you had an hour long wait to see the consultant, this must have been very frustrating for you and your daughter. We do try our very best to see our patients as soon as is possible, with minimum waiting times, but unfortunately this is not always the case and our patients have to wait longer than we would like.

You also explained about the short consultation time you had, I cannot comment at the moment as to why the time was of a short length, but if you would like to contact me personally on kate.macdonald@aapct.scot.nhs.uk or on 01292 513607, I will be able to take some more details from you to look into it further. (I am not back in the office until 30th December, just to let you know, but will respond to any communication after this date)

Finally, I do hope that your daughter had a positive outcome to the tests that the consultant arranged for her.

Kind regards

Kate
