"lack of treatment for hypothyroidism"

About: Shropshire and Staffordshire

(as the patient),

I was feeling a lot of hypothyroid symptoms (hair loss, weight gain, cold all the time, depression and many more). My GP would not put me on a trial of thyroid medication because my TSH was just over 5.

The GP's lab cut off point is 5. 5. The GP said she will not treat me till my TSH is over 10! Well I would be extremely unwell if that happened so I went privately to see a specialist who was shocked that I wasn't being treated.

All my symptoms developed when my TSH went from 1. 4 to over 5, in the space of a few months. The specialist wrote to my GP asking for me to be put me on thyroid meds, and my GP still wouldn't treat me. I feel the GP has put my health seriously at risk.

The NICE guidelines say that you can have a trial if you have hypothyroid symptoms if your TSH is under 10.
