"Abominable care in A&E and Fracture clinic"

About: The Royal Victoria Infirmary

Anything else?

Following a broken wrist in Spain my wife received first rate care in this poor country. They advised that the break was complicated and would need surgery on return to UK. On return, the RVI A&E left her injury unsupported when they removed the back slab and then put it back on (in a different position, supported only by a crepe bandage). When seen by a junior doctor at the fracture clinic he explained that he thought my wife would need to be admitted as the fracture was complicated. His Consultant disagreed and sent my wife home again (still in the same ill fitting back slab and bandage). When seen the following week, surprise surprise, the bones, previously reduced and aligned in Spain had started to fuse in a totally deformed position. After six weeks in a cast she is still in immense pain, with a clearly deformed hand which she can't use in any way, and the RVI have more or less abandoned her, offering her another appointment in two months time. Our GP couldn't believe the state in which my wife had been left by this disfunctional clinic. If you have any sense you won't go anywhere near the RVI's splendid and modern fracture clinic.

Thank you for taking the time to bring to our attention the concerns you have regarding your wife’s care received at the Fracture Clinic at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. We are very disappointed that the care she received did not meet the standards you expected and would wish to offer you an apology on behalf of the Musculoskeletal Services Directorate. May I assure you that your comments will be fed back to the department. As your comment has been posted without patient details, we are unable to look into your concerns in detail. However, we do wish to investigate how the shortcomings in your wife’s care happened. As such, we would be grateful if she could contact Mr P Powell, Musculoskeletal Services Directorate Manager on 0191 2137885 or a member of the Patient Relations Team on 0191 223 1382. Thank you once again for your feedback.
