"Fined for parking at A&E"

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital

Anything else?

Fined for parking at A&E Last Sunday evening I unfortunately had to attend Sunderland, A&E, the only downside concerning A&E was the wait to see a doctor and the poor privacy when with the doctor - I heard a detailed discussion between a doctor and a elderly woman concerning her rear passage through the thin curtain that separated our respective cubicles. The treatment was excellent, the staff friendly and efficient and I left knowing I had received as good a service as I could expect given it was A&E. However, I was less than happy to have my driver receive a parking ticket for having gone out of his way and rush me to A&E. I being preoccupied with my condition wasn't taking any notice of getting there or parking the car. He parked, I headed for A&E, he did apprently try to pay £2 but the machine refused the money and he was more concerned as about me than the car parking machine and so followed me into A&E. Now I have a fine to pay - to a company that routinely rejects appeals Sunderland Royal, bet your feeling proud of yourselves and your milking of another 'cash cow'

Thank you for your comments. We are pleased to hear that in terms of the care you received you felt this to be excellent. Thank you for your helpful comments too regarding privacy of patients during consultations. We will ensure this is brought to the attention of the staff in the Emergency Department so they can look to see if they can improve this issue. We have recently started work on developing plans for our new Emergency Department and your observations will be useful to those involved in this work. Our existing unit was built in 1978 and is largely unchanged, despite the growing numbers of patients coming through the emergency system. We hope the new department when completed (around the summer of 2016), will improve the overall experience for our patients. We are sorry your friend has received a parking charge notice and appreciate that in emergency situations, parking fees can sometimes be fogotten about. If you could please contact us at corporate.affairs@chsft.nhs.uk we can look into this further for you. Thank you once again.
