My son was admitted following an road accident when he was hit by a out of control driver.. Emergency response was exceptional... Unfortunately after a few days in ward c6 he has contracted an infection. Having spend time in hospital myself, several times happily. I am extremely concerned that he contracted this infection, Especially when in the bed opposite a similar situation has arisen with serious consequence for the patience. In general the ward is untidy, the toilets are dirty, I fully appreciate that visitors are an important part of patience recovery. But I do feel that the visiting hours are excessive. with 3 and 4 visitors to a bed, some sitting on beds, and none patience walking around the wards is not conducive to good practice infection control..

Thank you for letting us know us about your son’s experience in our care and for making suggestions about how we might improve.

We are currently doing some essential works on Ward C6 to expand our critical care capacity from April 2014 (by four beds). The work started last month. We are working to keep disruption to a minimum for patients, their relatives and carers. It may be that the ward appears cluttered due to limited space available to store some of our vital equipment. However, we wish to reassure you that the toilets are checked and cleaned on a regular basis. We are sorry you found them unsatisfactory during your visit.

Our visitors’ code (available on our website here: https://www.nuh.nhs.uk/patients-and-visitors/visitors-guide/) is very clear about visitors not sitting on beds as this is an infection risk. We also discourage large groups of visitors so that our patients can get the rest they need and to keep noise to a minimum on our wards. We are currently reviewing and refreshing our visitors’ code and will take this as an opportunity to remind our patients and staff of the role we can each play to keep our patients as safe as they can be and reduce the risk of infection.
