"dreadful care given , dreadful waiting times on..."

About: Medway Maritime Hospital

Anything else?

As a recent visitor to see my husband who was admitted on Saturday morning , discharged on Monday and re admitted on Tuesday morning . The whole experience was traumatic to say the least , during the total of 56 hours of hospital stay he was on a trolley bed for appox 20 hours . his condition was not treated correctly and he was sent home still unwell resulting in readmission the next day . He was then subjected to spiteful treatment and left feeling stressed and exhausted by the whole experience . During his stay his medication which be brought from home was not administered correctly , the doctors failed to read notes properly , prescribed incorrect medication and failed to give nebulizers or intravenous antibiotic that he was admitted to hospital to receive . He requested pain relief for approx. three hours whilst in an observation ward on a trolley which (he'd been on since admission since 1pm) he was told he had to wait possibly for another 1.5 hours at least . He has painkillers at home and as he was not going to be administered the intravenous drugs as promised he decided he would leave . The nurses seem to be stressed and so understaffed they are telling patients that they will be deciding how things work and not be lead by the patients needs . Having visited Medway many times over recent years due to my husbands condition , I can say the care and attention to patient needs has gone down hill . Staff do not acknowledge anyone visiting wards and when challenged they dismiss people . Every time I have visited I have been able to access wards and wander around at ease . I have had to approach staff to ask where my husband was on every occasion sometimes even finding his location by reading the admission boards. if I were a patient I certainly would not like people inspecting me in my bed to see who was in it . where is the privacy and dignity ?

I am sorry to hear that you felt your experience was traumatic, the delays you speak of are not acceptable and I am incredibly concerned that your husband experienced spiteful treatment by staff. All of the problems you have outlined must be looked into further, I am deeply concerned by what you describe. Please contact me directly on the number or email below and I will investigate. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Inmaculada Diaz Alonso Emergency Department, Clinical Nurse Lead inmaculada.diaz-alonso@medway.nhs.uk 01634 833847
