Anything else?

Around 6 years ago my GP suspected I had MS and referred me to the Neurologist. As my eyesight had also gone strange, I was also referred to an Optho-Neurologist at the eye clinic who confirmed I'd had something due to the paleness of my optic nerve but it wasn't Optic Neuritis, and booked a CT scan. Nothing else was said and no follow up appointment. A few days later someone called and said the CT had been changed to an MRI. I had the MRI and saw the Neurologist who after spending literally 30 seconds with me said it wasn't MS and basically wanted me out of there as fast as he could get me out. No questions, no history, no asking what my current symptoms were etc. He even said outright that it was all in my head!!! The experience was so bad that I spent almost an hour crying to the nurse who was asked to take some blood. A few years later I was then diagnosed with Fibromyalgia by a Rheumatologist after never having any kind of follow up with Neurology. Anyway fast forward to present day and I've had yet another 'relapse' and this time saw a GP who I have not seen before who has referred me straight back to Neurology. I'm now thinking 'is it MS after all?' Neuro's don't deal with fibromyalgia. I'm actually dreading going back after the last experience and fully expect to leave without any answers or thorough examination. Things are so bad if I had the money for a private MRI, I'd pay it without a second thought. Another rude, arrogant, unprofessional Neurologist implying I'm making it all up is not what I need right now........

We are truly sorry to hear that – it’s definitely not the experience we want patients to have because it’s important you’re taken seriously and treated with respect, especially when you are worried about your health. The consultant you saw in Neurology wasn’t one of our doctors – the neurologists visit DRI from a specialist health trust that provides neurology services – but we are concerned by your experience and would like to reassure you that, if you contact us in confidence with more details, we will address this with the other trust. We would also really encourage you to accept the new referral by your GP. If your doctor thinks you should see a neurologist then it is important that you do this. It may help you get the answer you are looking for and the doctor you see this time should treat your concerns with respect and seriousness. If you would like to contact us about this so we can look into it further, you can do so in confidence by contacting Louise Deakin, Service Manager, on email (our email format is firstname.lastname@dbh.nhs.uk) or calling 01302 366666 ext 3617.
