"Not all went to plan, but it worked out well in..."

About: George Eliot Hospital - Acute Services

Anything else?

16 months ago I had surgery at GEH, the surgeon, anaesthetist and myself were involved in all decisions involving my treatment and care. From day one I knew this surgery was going to be rather complicated, but all went well. One month later I developed an access under the scar, antibiotics cleared it within a few days. Unfortunately, it came back a few days after the course of antibiotics had finished. Different antibiotics, abscess cleared, not for long though. Discussions with my surgeon, we thought it most probable that my body was reacting to some of the internal sutures, so they were removed. Looking at the removed sutures, we knew we were correct. Sadly, their removal did not cure the problem, they had caused an infection that wasn't going away. All in all I had 4 surgeries, 5 months of antibiotics of varying strengths, three weeks as an in patient and 17 days on two super drugs. Plus 14 more days on one of those drugs and another not quite as strong as an out patient. The serious reactions from those drugs I suffered for over 2 months. However, from the nurses who treated my disgusting wound numerous times a week between August & New Year, the cleaners who kept the ward clean, the hostesses who bought me food with their own money to try to tempt me when i could not eat, the nurses who looked after me, to the young doctors who treated me daily when i was an in patient, to my orthopaedic surgeon and anaesthetist I could not have been given better care had I been the Queen of England.

THank you for taking the time to provide the detail of your experience as a patient over the last 16 months and for your thanks to the staff who treated and cared for you. I hope that you are now fully recovered from the complications following your operation. Regards Christine Longstaff, Head of Patient Partnership
