"Doctors and nurses were friendly ..."

About: Leighton Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

Doctors and nurses were friendly and caring towards our baby.

What could be improved

Baby with 40 degree temperature waited over 3 hours to be seen, and would have been longer if we hadn't gone looking for someone.Despite advance call from GP & hospital booking-in procedure, they claimed no-one had told the doctor we were there. Strange that her name was on the whiteboard if no-one knew she was there.

Baby vomited everywhere, including on her bed, at 9pm - asked over 8 times through the night for someone to clean up - finally complained at 11am and it was done.

Were told not to dispose of diarrhoea-filled nappy in ward bins and that someone would collect it - waited over 3 hours and it was only removed when we complained. If we had been shown the bathroom with nappy bins, this could have been avoided. We weren't shown around the ward and had no idea where toilets, tea machine etc were. Not told when or where meals were provided. Not told about weekly car park rates so we were fleeced by outrageous daily charges. Baby was born at home so we had no experience of hospitals before. Friends have described Leighton as being dirty and disorganised - so disappointed that it is true.

As a Unit we are sorry that you feel that the care your baby received was compromised. We strive for babies and children on the ward to be seen as soon as possible, depending on their clinical condition. It seems that communication during your baby’s stay was not to the standard we expect to provide to parents and carers. You should have been familiarised with the ward and information available regarding the dining room and shop facilities.

We have taken on board the comments made about your stay and will be discussing them at the next ward meeting in order to learn lessons from your experience and views.

We provide information in both parent rooms regarding car parking and instructions in gaining a weekly pass and several weeks ago we updated the information in the patient files regarding facilities and car parking.

Hygiene is a priority on the Unit and our domestic staff do ensure high standards of cleanliness are maintained at all times.

Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention.
