"Urgent Care, BAGH"

About: Bishop Auckland Hospital

Anything else?

I am an NHS worker and understand the pressures and demands of working in the current NHS. The NHS and its workers, most of whom are dedicated and passionate individuals, receive regular criticism as a result of changes, stresses and bad reflection within the media. As a Mum of two young children aged 1 and 2 1/2, I would like to reflect on my recent experience of the 111 service and Urgent Care at Bishop Auckland General Hospital. After a busy day celebrating my sons birthday, both children settled to bed and were soon settled and asleep. Soon after my daughter, who is 2 and a half, began coughing in her sleep. It soon developed into a distinctive croup like cough that was causing her a lot of distress. Over a period of an hour, with numerous cuddles and reassurances from myself and my husband, her condition got worse, with difficulties with her breathing as a result of the sudden onset and the distressed the she was in. I contacted 111 at 22.30pm, and was dealt with very efficiently by the lady on the phone, who was able to give appropriate management advice, and reassurances, suggesting that my daughter would need to be seen within an hour. Within minutes of ending the call, a further phone all was received from a medic at Urgent Care, who could hear my daughters breathing rested, suggesting we immediately took her to urgent care. This doctor requested more information including history, allergies and current weight. On my arrival to hospital, two doctors were awaiting our arrival, and my daughter and I were directed immediately into a bay, where the doctor had prepared appropriate treatment ready to administer to my daughter, and had further equipment set up in case of a crisis. My daughter was clearly unwell, though her episodes of coughing had reduced and no hospital stay or further intervention was required. We were home by 23.15pm. The care and attention my daughter received was outstanding. I would like to thank the staff on duty at Urgent Care on the evening of Sunday 10th November, your efficiency, empathy and knowledge was outstanding. The operator of the 111 service was great too! Thank You.
