"Renal department and after care"

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital

Anything else?

My mother was rushed to Brighton from Hastings in June of this year and admitted to the renal ward. She was quickly seen by a flurry of consultants and had numerous tests. We, her family were beside ourselves with worry and spent a lot of time in the ward with our mother. Within two weeks she was diagnosed with Good Pastures Disease, complete kidney failure and a blot clot on her lung. She has to have diaylsis 3 times a week for the rest of her life. Everyone took the time to include us in her treatment and we were actively encouraged to help our mother where we could. You could not fault the consultants, doctors and staff for their kindness in any way. The lady in the next bed was becoming confused and was distressed about laying down to go to sleep. The nurses spent a long time feeding and attending to this lady, eventually the doctor came in and laid his head on the pillow next to hers and spoke softly to her stroking her face, needless to say the lady settled and went to sleep. Such kindness brought a tear to my eye. I can also say one of the nurses would often stay passed her contracted hours to make sure that when she left her patients were settled. There are not enough words to praise these people, we would just like to thank them from the bottom of our hearts. On my mother's discharge the story changes. A catalogue of disasters, no communication, lack of knowledge about history of patient - obvious no reading of notes, serious errors in medication given, lack of respect, difficult to get anyone to speak to, waiting long periods of time to be seen with no explanation eg day surgery to have a procedure, she sat from 12 to 4 on a hard chair unable to eat or drink, we were told conflicting information by rude staff which turned out to be false. My mother is 71 and has to travel 30 miles to Brighton 3 times a week for dialysis, surgical procedures mean an extra day. Sometimes she is so exhausted she spends a free day in bed. What started out to be bearable with a few life changing adaptions has turned into a nightmare for her by rude inconsiderate staff who should remember people attending the hospital are ill, vulnerable and scared who rely on them. If a NHS worker whether cleaner or consultant can not bring themselves to do this then change their job as it over shadows the brilliant people who deserve medals for what they do.

I am very sorry for our delay in responding to you. Thank you for your very kind words regarding the inpatient care recieved by your mother. I have shared your comments with the renal team who were so pleased to learn of the difference this made to your family at what must have been a very difficult time. I was however, very sorry to learn of your mother's experience following her discharge and would very much like to discuss this with you. If this is something you would find helpful please do contact me by telephoning 01273 664511 or by emailing complaints@bsuh.nhs.uk Jane Carmody, Head of Patient Experience, PALS and Complaints
