I cannot praise the staff of Critical Care, Hemingford Ward, and of Papworth Hospital in general, for the care I received before, during and after my quadruple heart bypass operation on October 24 this year, 2013. Although there were regular changes of staff, everyone was always thoroughly informed about my condition and progress. Nothing was too much trouble. One's dignity was respected, but there was no petty imposition of rules. I had a comfortable bed in a pleasant room with two other gentlemen. The room was regularly cleaned, and this was also checked. The temperature was just right. It is important that such rooms have natural light and windows, which was the case where I was. There was always a good choice of meals, and I found the food sufficiently hot (when appropriate!) and always enjoyable, brought round by pleasant ladies. There was also regular tea etc. at exactly the times when one wanted it. Visiting times were sensible and could be flexible when necessary. I found both the physiotherapists who visited me to be ideal for my situation. They were encouraging, helpful and full of sound advice and information, yet encouraged me to use my own initiative. The visits from doctors and the pharmacist were similarly constructive and welcome. The staff wheeling one around on beds or wheelchairs were good company and really efficient. I was assured soon after my operation that everything had gone as it should. It was good to be reassured so promptly, and to be able to see my wife and younger son so soon after the event. A friend who had an operation similar to mine ten years ago at Papworth told me before my op that when he recalls the care he received at Papworth, it brings tears to his eyes. I completely agree. I am in awe of the efficiency and commitment of every member of staff that I encountered, all accomplished without any unnecessary fuss. I count myself so fortunate that I live in the catchment for Papworth, albeit at one of its furthermost reaches. With my whole being, and on behalf of my appreciative family, I thank you all.
