"Not awful but not great either"

About: Hull Royal Infirmary

Anything else?

I've been to Hull Royal twice, both times via the ER. First I had a terrible headache; my GP insisted I go as he was worried I had meningitis. Once I got the ER, I was seen by a nurse and sent back to the waiting room. I sat there for several hours, in terrible pain, until I asked what was happening; they told me they were waiting to admit me. I was offered a place to lay down and given some pain killers. Why no one told me what was going on before this is a mystery. I didnt want to be admitted, but they insisted and after several hours on the ward, I was seen by a rude doctor in the middle of the night who ran a blood test, told me I didn't have meningitis and that I'd have to wait until the morning to see a consultant. It's a good thing, I suppose, that I didn't have meningitis, because if I did I would have been dead by the time she made her assessment. I was not offered anything to drink or to eat or pain killers despite telling them my head felt like it was going to explode. I had to stay on the ward, which was incredibly loud, all night, I did not get any sleep. in the morning, the consultant said, 'you don't have meningitis.' nothing was offered for my pain, but he said I could come to a headache clinic 'if I felt like it'. I demanded to be discharged immediately, and was told by a nurse to get back to my bed and lay down. So I walked out. I have never been treated so badly in my life by healthcare personnel, I tried my best to be polite and said repeatedly that I didn't want to be admited, but I was at their insistence and then treated like I was wasting their time. I do not understand why I couldn't have been given a blood test for meningitis in the ER, sent home (since I didn't see anyone for hours anyway), and phoned if there was a problem. Seems a huge waste of resource. The second time I went to Hull Royal was for an injury. The ER experience was much better, particularly the care of the doctor who saw me -- I was examined and had an xray quickly. But I also observed a lot of time wasting, particularly by nurses who seem to spend a huge amount of time chatting. I watched as two different drs told a group of nurses to dress my wound. they ignored both for a total of 45 mins while I sat there and listened to them discuss the great british bake off. Finally I stood near them until one sighed and attended to my cut. She seemed terribly irritated to have to do so. Two days later I came back for surgery, at appt at 10:30am, only to be told I wouldn't be seen until half 1. I just do not understand the inability to keep appt times to within 2 hours and the nurses, who are often rude. I think a much greater effort needs to be made to speak with patients about what's going on and how long they may have to wait. I had childcare issues and would have appreciated someone just speaking to me instead of having to chase down information. There seems to be a general air of disorganization that is shocking. Having said all that, the doctors were brill
