I feel compelled to contact you with regards the outstanding support and care I was offered/received by my Oncology Registrar on 1st November 2013 AAU1 Trying to stay succinct. I was admitted to AAU 1 from casualty on 26th October 2013 with an infection in a Hickman Line (3rd time, 2nd line) I was treated extremely well in AAU. AAU being under extreme pressure for beds were working really hard to get me on my feet and home, overall I was feeling quite good but the infection I had was very stubborn even after 5 days. I never ever felt anyone was trying to get me out to free up beds. In fact they told me the opposite. I put myself under that pressure, seeing very ill people being admitted while I felt relatively good. The Doctors were aware that I had started chemotherapy only last Monday and they were trying very hard to save this new, second Hickman line from being removed. They wanted Oncology as well as myself included in any decision making. This is where the doctor stepped in. The doctor visited me in ward and we had a long discussion with regards the options open to me and the fact that I was very keen to go home but also to continue with my Chemotherapy. I had recently been informed that I may have Lynch Syndrome so chemotherapy treatment has taken on a slightly higher significance for me. The doctor worked out a couple of alternative options that she said I can later discuss with my Consultant once she returns from Leave. I on the doctor's advice decided the best option would be to remove the Hickman Line so that I could be discharged and continue with my chemo as soon as possible. The problem the AAU Team faced was surgical theatre space and a surgical team. The doctor suggested to the AAU Doctors that she would be happy to remove the line later that same day, allowing me to go home (once examined by the team) and that would avoid the requirement of trying to fit me into a very busy theatre/surgical schedule. A couple of hours later the doctor removed the line. The AAU Team were very grateful for this. What I consider so outstanding was not only the fact that the doctor removed my Hickman Line herself. She had no need to volunteer her valuable time. Hand on Heart the procedure was so comfortable, pain free and in quick time. (She had the same problems the surgical team had with my first line) During the procedure the doctor explained everything she was doing. Asked if I was free from pain and ensured my wound would not be very noticeable ( I gave up speedo modelling some time ago) which it isn't. A couple of stitches was allowed home a couple of hours later after a further course of antibiotic and being checked by the AAU Team. Amazing. Thank You. It may all be in a days work for the doctor but to me and my family it was a very unselfish thing to do. It helped me and certainly helped her colleagues in AAU. Worlds Best Oncology Team. Thank You.
