I was in Ward 31 in April 2013 for a hysterectomy and ward 22 16th October for partial nephrectomy. This is my first full day at home. Ward 22 can feel like the entrance to hell when one is feeling ill and confused. The staff are generally very very good but this is all taken away by the ward logistics. Nightingale wards I thought went out with the ark but here is one functioning at LGH! It is hot, horrendously noisy at night, poor bathroom facilities and an unwelcoming day room. To balance this criticism, all of the urology/renal team, barring one arrogant junior doctor, are a delight - calm, efficient and informative. The day nursing staff are so patient, the domestics keep the ward and the second rate toilet facilities pristine. The night nursing staff are also patient and efficient but sometimes do not seem to realise how the noise is magnified at night due to the ward layout. The catering staff are very helpful in making meal choices and generally pleasant to chat to and the food is a vast improvement on my stay in April. Hospital food will never be "cordon bleu" but I think the food I sampled was on the right route. Overall, my experience with this latest more serious operation was not as bad as I expected and although I could not in all honesty recommend ward 22 for comfort, the staff working in there could not be faulted. I would like to extend an apology to Night staff on Saturday 18th October as under the influence of drugs, pain and lack of sleep, it appears I "kicked off" over the noise etc. I still think most of my comments, from what I can remember, were justified, but not to the poor nurse who took the brunt of my tirade.
