"2nd visit in 6 months"

About: Leicester General Hospital

Anything else?

I was in Ward 31 in April 2013 for a hysterectomy and ward 22 16th October for partial nephrectomy. This is my first full day at home. Ward 22 can feel like the entrance to hell when one is feeling ill and confused. The staff are generally very very good but this is all taken away by the ward logistics. Nightingale wards I thought went out with the ark but here is one functioning at LGH! It is hot, horrendously noisy at night, poor bathroom facilities and an unwelcoming day room. To balance this criticism, all of the urology/renal team, barring one arrogant junior doctor, are a delight - calm, efficient and informative. The day nursing staff are so patient, the domestics keep the ward and the second rate toilet facilities pristine. The night nursing staff are also patient and efficient but sometimes do not seem to realise how the noise is magnified at night due to the ward layout. The catering staff are very helpful in making meal choices and generally pleasant to chat to and the food is a vast improvement on my stay in April. Hospital food will never be "cordon bleu" but I think the food I sampled was on the right route. Overall, my experience with this latest more serious operation was not as bad as I expected and although I could not in all honesty recommend ward 22 for comfort, the staff working in there could not be faulted. I would like to extend an apology to Night staff on Saturday 18th October as under the influence of drugs, pain and lack of sleep, it appears I "kicked off" over the noise etc. I still think most of my comments, from what I can remember, were justified, but not to the poor nurse who took the brunt of my tirade.

Dear Sue, Thank you for the feedback about Ward 22. Ward 22 is a 20 bedded ward which comprises of 1 x bay of 4 beds, 3 side rooms and a main nightingale ward comprising of 13 beds. Nightingale wards are still operational especially at the LGH where we have and utilise a number of nightingale wards. As highlighted one of the down falls of a nightingale ward is that noise can travel further around the ward. Ear plugs are available on the wards to be used at night as staff still have to continue to carry out patient care however Sister Dawson will remind all staff about keeping noise to a minimum. Conversely one of the benefits of the nightingale wards is that patients, especially those undergoing major surgery, feel more re assured that all patients are seen and that they can see the nursing staff. The facilities within the bathrooms are basic however the standards of cleanliness are monitored monthly by the domestic supervisors and matron. If these standards fall below 90% then these audits are carried out weekly until the required levels of cleanliness are maintained. One of our ward sisters is in the process of transforming the dayroom into a dining room for patients to use and has ordered the tables and chairs from charitable funds in order to provide patients with a quieter and more ‘homely’ like meal time. We appreciate the kind words you have written about our staff and I hope that the above gives you a better understanding of the way the ward works. Kind regards Julia Todd Matron for Urology & GI Surgery Leicester General Hospital
