About: St Helier Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

Called an Ambulance early in the morning one day due to palpitations, racing heartbeat, tightness in left arm and chest pain. I was 'Blue Lighted' into resuscitation at St Helier. I was met by 2 Doctors and 2 Nurses and straight away I was put on Oxygen and they got to work. They struggled for ages trying to put a cannula in but eventually, after what seemed like 20 odd times, they succeeded. I was given 3 x Adenosine to try and slow my heart rate down which didn't work. Then they mentioned about having to use the defibrillator to shock my heart, I was given some sort of sedative and was shocked 3 times which again didn't work. Eventually I was given something by IV and that seemed to have some effect as well as the IV Fluid with Potassium in and the IV Magnesium. It was a frightening experience to go through, I didn't realise how serious and how Ill I really was but there was one nurse in particular who made me feel safe, I think Her name was Michelle. Thank you very much for looking after me the way you did and also coming to see me on AMU the next night. I will never forget you.

Response from Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust

Thank you so much for giving us your feedback. We are really pleased to hear that one of our nurses made you feel safe in what was an understandably unsettling experience for you.

We are pleased our staff treated you well and your valued comments will be fed back to staff. Our staff work incredibly hard and it very encouraging for them to know they are valued and that patients appreciate their efforts.

Thank you!
