"Not enough staff, no time for patients. Found very..."

About: Leicester General Hospital

Anything else?

I spent 2 an half weeks at the LRI and found the staff there had time for the patients and really cared. I was transferred to the LGH as my baby needed to be in the NICU. I arrived at the general, put into a bed telling me someone would come talk to me. Bearing in mind, I had not seen my baby for about 18 hrs and had only seen briefly hrs after having him as had emergency c-section. I sat in the bed for 20 mins crying as I was put in a room with someone who had had her baby and had staff coming and going to her. after some time I had someone come and say she taking me to see my baby. Once returned I had been moved to a room where they had not had there baby so was hearing heart monitors etc. Again told someone would come and talk to me, but no one did come, and I wash't told where facilities were I had to find the toilets for my self. I sat and cried myself to sleep. Throughout my time and the general which was a just over a week, I found the staff to be rushed and unable to give me any time, often not getting meds or blood pressure taken till 2 in the morning. I at one point had the sharps box which was over full left in my room from 4pm till past midnight. I went and reminded staff that the box was in my room, and was rudely told they would come and get it at some point. I had visitors come and see me and said they had been spoken to very rudely by staff, yes I know they need to ensure and children are either mine or over a certain age and that people wash and sanitise but this can all be done in a friendly manner however that was not mine or my visitors experience. My only consolation was that staff looking after my baby in NICU where nice and friendly and made an effort to inform me of my babies care and supported me to do as much of his care as possible. I am very grateful for them. There was one lady on ward a volunteer who was very helpful and nice and I wish right now I could remember her name. I will be making a point of bringing her in a box of chocolates or something, as well as staff on NICU wish I could do more to show my appreciation.

Response from Leicester General Hospital

Hi Marie, Thank you for taking the time to review your experience of Leicester's Hospitals. It sounds like you had some very posituve experiences, especiallu at LRI and with NICU at the General, but there are also some issues here. We are very sorry that the maternity staff were too busy to attend to you properly, this is not acceptable. If you would like your concerns to be followed up in more detail, please contact Lead Midwife for LGH Joan.Morrissey@uhl-tr.nhs.uk Kind regards Communications Team Leicester's Hospitals
