"my stay winter ward and a and e"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow)

Anything else?

I had terrible time on winter ward. Only 2 staff on that night, ignored all buzzers, was in bed next to dying lady (I am young 49), no sleep due to lady with dementia shouting all night. Staff ignored my request to try to calm her down, one of them was asleep on night shift, could not be bothered to even look at me. I became mentally unwell, I had to be urgently transferred off Winter Ward. Other patients were also desperate to get out, get discharged, but no doctor on ward to discharge anyone. I resorted to going to private hospital as way to get out. I had pneumonia and Winter Ward was not right choice of ward at all for me. No care, terrible uncaring staff, I assume that was the only bed available as I came from A and E. A and E took very long time to diagnose pneumonia, old chest X ray machine showed nothing, by pure luck a consultant took pity on me , as it was Friday night and I said 'please do not leave me like this all weekend' ie/unable to breathe, he managed to get me a scan on the new luxury PCTA? scanner and it did show I had severe pneumonia. So antibiotic drip etc started. What if I had not had that wonderful scan? Thank you to who ever that A and E doctor was, but to everyone else I am so sad to have such poor care, as I have myself worked for the NHS for 20 years.

Dear Syl, Thank you for getting in touch with your concerns and for praising the part of your care which was effective. I am so sorry to read the other elements of what you describe and I can see we need to take urgent action to find out what has happened and address the problem. I have escalated this to the Director of Nursing immediately, but critically we need as much information from you as possible about when this happened. You have clearly had a very difficult time, however we would be keen to get in touch with you so would greatly appreciate it if you would make contact. In the first instance we'd like you to call our Patient Experience Team on 01279 827084 or email us with your details at pals@pah.nhs.uk.
