About: Queen's Hospital (Romford)

Anything else?

My mum had a emergency operation in March after being rushed to hospital from her doctor. The care she received during her visit was brilliant. However I am sad I am disgusted with her recent treatment. In June a small section of the scar from her surgery burst open, after numerous visits to the doctors the wound hadn't healed and she was told she would have to be referred back to her surgeon and that she would have to wait for letter for her appointment. She was left waiting nearly 8 weeks for her appointment, we did everything we could during this time to keep the wound clean, however she developed 2 inflections. Once she finally got her appointment, her surgeon had her put straight on the list and she had a small operation. Again I can not fault the treatment she received from the nurses and her surgeons that cared for her. A week later she had her stitches out and everything seemed fine. However once we had been home little while a small hole opened above where she had her stitches out. She went back to the doctors to see the nurse and the nurse sent her to a&e. After a long wait in a&e, we were sent back to the original ward she was on when she had her first surgery. The doctor we saw was nice enough, he told us that my mum had a fistula. A hole that goes from her skin to the I side of her body. He dressed her wound and told us that he would talk to her surgeon the next day and she should expect a call from the hospital within the next few days, a few days passed and no call, it's a week yesterday since she saw the doctor so she decided to ring up. After getting through, and speaking to a nurse, she was told there was no record of her ever being back, a record I know exists as I saw it in the doctors hands, I watched him fill it out. The nurse has said that that she will get a appointment for my mum with her surgeon, and she should expect a letter. We wasn't told how long her wait Will be, but I dread to think. My mum has been left with a open wound, a gateway into her body that any bacteria can make a home. I dread to think what the outcome of this could be ...

I am very sorry to hear about the delays in your mother’s treatment. This must be very distressing for her, and it is unacceptable that you have been left waiting so long. I will certainly bring this up with the team. If you are still waiting to see the surgeon, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) so they can arrange this for you as soon as possible. You can contact PALS on 01708 435454 or email PALS@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk Yours sincerely, Dr Mike Gill Medical Director
