"My treatment on discharge"

About: Russells Hall Hospital

Anything else?

Whilst I was being held at the hospital I had no qualms about my treatment. My issue is with how I was treated when they needed my bed and therefore discharged me. The last night of my stay I was moved at 11pm at night onto a room that can only be described as a waiting room with a few beds chucked in it. On the morning no doctor came to see me and I was moved at around noon into the discharge lounge following the a phone between the nurse that was looking after me and the doctor. I said that I wanted it put on my notes that I wasn't happy about being discharged having not seen a doctor and then one suddenly appeared and basically fobbed me off in around 10 seconds. I had no time to ask questions and felt that I couldn't. I really feel that if it weren't for the hospital wanting the bed I would have been kept in and had further investigations but now I have to wait for an outpatient appointment to come through whilst worrying at home. I was moved to the discharge lounge at noon having had no lunch and had to wait around four hours for my medicines to come up from pharmacy before I could leave, by which time my pain relief from 6am had completely worn off. I really feel that I was dismissed without a full discussion as to what they thought was wrong with me or what the plan going forward was and to be honest since being moved late at night I really felt like I was in the way and shouldn't be there. I must stress hat the nurses were great and we're chasing doctors for me and really looked after me during my stay and my dissatisfaction is with the hospital as a whole and the doctors especially on my discharge from hospital

Thank you Katherine for letting us know about your experience of our hospital. We are very sorry to hear that you were not happy with the care you received and the way you were discharged. We are very sorry if the way you were discharged gave you cause for concern and left you worrying about your treatment. This is not what we would want for any of our patients. The decision to discharge you would not have been taken without full consideration by the doctors and nurses taking care of you. Patients are not necessary seen by their doctor on the day of discharge as the decision as to whether they are fit enough to return home may have already been made. We can assure you that you would have only been discharged if your doctor was fully satisfied that you were well enough to go home. We make every effort to make sure our patients are not transferred between wards during the night as we know how disruptive this can be. We do not take the decision to do this lightly, however, when the hospital is particularly busy there is sometimes no alternative but to do this. Any bedded room that patients are transferred to will be a ward that is staffed appropriately, offering the same level of care and facilities as all our ward areas. If you were in the discharge lounge during a meal time you should have been offered a sandwich for your lunch, along with light refreshments throughout the day. Patients in the lounge are also asked every hour if they would like anything to eat or drink. We can only apologise if this did not happen during your stay there. Making sure our patients feel fully informed about every aspect of their treatment is a priority for us, so we are very sorry if you feel you were not given all the information you wanted. If you would like to discuss the issues you have mentioned further, either to raise your concerns or to discuss your ongoing care, you can contact matron on 01384 456111 extension 3128 who will arrange a meeting with you.
