"Issues with anaesthetic care and also with privacy"

About: Grantham & District Hospital

Anything else?

I had surgery at Grantham last week. I am concerned with the tick list approach, I think it leads to a fasle sense of security and leaves little room to the individual and thier worries and concerns. The anaesthetist left me with a bruised face and a bruised and sore wrist from the cannula site which seems to have been forced down the side of my ulna, after I had been induced with gas. On returning to the ward I found that decisions on future treatment been taken and been discussed with my husband without my consent. The staff did however response to some of my concerns and the surgeon did come to speak to me before I left.

Thank you for leaving your feedback which I read with mixed feelings - firstly I appreciate the concern around a tick list type approach; I can see what you mean - however checking and double checking details at different stages through the surgical journey are a proven process for ensuring important issues are not missed. That said ticking the right boxes should not 'feel' like a tick box approach......explaining why is important so that you as a patient can understand and be involved; I am sorry that this was not the case for you as I am sure you would have then understood the reasons much better.

Secondly I am sorry that you were left with some bruising; which can occur - but again was not discussed with you - and notably discussions were had with your husband without your consent for which I am very sorry. I am however pleased that the staff were able to resolve your concerns and you had the opportunity to speak with the surgeon. I hope that you had all your questions and concerns answered though please do come back to me directly at: jennie.negus@ulh.nhs.uk if this was not the case.

Again please accept my apologies and thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience - I hope you are now recovering well.
