I was referred to the ENT department as my lymph nodes had been swollen for more than 1 year. The consultant send me for an ultrasound. On the ultrasound the guy found a lump in my thyroid that looked suspicious so he did a biopsy and told me to get an appointment a couple of weeks later to find out if the tumour was malignant or benign. I got an appointment a little bit more than 3 weeks later and went to the appointment thinking that everything should be fine because nobody phoned me to tell me otherwise. Imagine my shock when the ENT consultant tells me my tumour results came back as malignant and I'll have to get one side of my thyroid removed. He said as it's urgent I'll get operated within 2 to 3 weeks. They gave me a pre-op appointment 3 weeks later and told me that probably it's gonna be the week after and they'll let me know the previous evening. On my pre-op I'm informed that my tumour is follicular and that after they remove it they'll decide what kind of treatment I'll have to follow. On the day of the surgery I'm all ready to go inside the theatre when a consultant comes to check my lump and because he can't feel it (something normal as it's only a little bit more than 1cm) he says that he's gonna check the results from my biopsy and ultrasound and he'll come back later. When he returns he tells me he's not gonna perform the lobectomy because he doesn't see anything wrong with my results and I've been misinformed by 2 different doctors about having thyroid cancer, that it was only a suspicion, that his assistant will book me a later appointment to speak with him personally. They send me to another ultrasound appointment that evening and they keep me going to wrong departments with wrong information for a couple of hours. Once I'm finally inside the right room angry as hell I tell the radiologist what happened and he tells me that what they did to me it's out of order. He just checked my biopsy results and it's a clear case for lobectomy. To go back to the ward and complaint, that I need that surgery. At the ward I ask to speak back to the consultant. A different guy comes and I tell him what I've just been told. He then goes to tell me something completely new. The reason for the consultant in the morning to cancel my appointment was because after checking my results it was obvious they were going to remove the wrong side of my thyroid and that he probably didn't tell me to not upset me. Imagine my shock. He said they'll have an MDT at some point and discuss my case and let me know. I'm so angry at all those people playing with my life. In the meantime I'll spend a few more weeks or months being miserable while I don't know who's telling me the right information. In any case (suspicious or malignant) the surgery should be done and I've just got a letter saying I've been removed from the ENT inpatient. To say I'm angry is a misunderstandment. In the meantime I'll give my "suspicious or malignant" tumour time to grow and spread. :(
