"Recent trip to derriford hospitals A&E "

About: Derriford Hospital / Accident and emergency Derriford Hospital / Neurology South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance

(as the patient),

Got taken in to hospital via ambulance due to extreme pain bottom of spine and pins and needles down my leg leading to being unable to move my legs.

The ambulance crew was amazing, helped to make me as comfortable as possible but on a&e I was unimpressed with the service I received as I started off by speaking to a nurse who was foreign and was unable to understand me or for me to understand her correctly.

Then I had seen a doctor who was going to put me into cdu as believed I was only getting back pain, even after I had explained I have neurological problems and was under a consultant within the hospital but he believed that controlling the pain and I would be fine to go home.

I went to cdu early hours of the morning and was seen on the doctors round the next morning who went on my notes to say it was ongoing back pain and that pain relief controlled and see the physiotherapist I would be able to help me go home, also wanted a complete screen of bloods, urine and obs to make sure that they wasn't missing an infection. I'm already on all the pain relief they requested for me to take and have been for a few years, and I use a catheter to go toilet that I have also been doing for 18 months.

They finally got me a catheter to be able to go toilet gone 230pm which was 12 hours after first reaching a&e and once I received my discharge notes to be able to go. I never had any bloods taken the whole timeline a&e and didn't have any urine tested even when the doctor requested it in front of me. I asked if my consultant up the hospital was informed that I was there and I was refused as my primary carer was my gp even with my on going problems that my consultant deals with.

I'm currently at home and I am in absolutely agony with pain and losing feeling within my leg and tingling going across my back and down my legs. I don't feel that going to hospital has done me any favours as feel worse now as there is nowhere else for me to turn for help until I get hold of my consultant and just feel so low as it's like I wasted there time.

The nurse on ward wasn't very helpful and didn't make me feel that welcome and was like I was wasting her and when requested my normal daily tablets I wasn't able to get them as they had no record of them. I am omeprazol and gabapentine as well as pain relief the hospital was allowing me to have, with out the omeprazol I had severe heart burn as stomach wasn't lined and my gabapentine is to help with my nerves which without for 12 hours make me to be in more pain and causes more problems.

Due to me not being able to have it made me feel worse than before, feel like they couldn't get rid of me quick enough even tho was in a lot of pain, was unable to eat and had been sick and I still didn't look into why I'm getting problems with my legs so I didn't even get an outcome, I do not have ongoing back pain like suggested and feel I'm just being pushed to one side.

I'm now having to wait till the weekend is over to be able to contact my consultant to tell him what's gone on due to hospital refusing to speak to him and hope that I can get an outcome of some sort to help get better so I can go back to work and look after my children ok as I'm a single mum of 2 small children.
