"Being let down CAMHS"

About: Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust / Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services – Community(County)

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter had another assessment from CAMHS, I now feel completely let down by this services. The member of staff that assessed my daughter spoke to me and my partner - very rude, very opinionated and be littled me. I was told that my daughters eating disorder is down to my parenting skills. My daughter had to go in the room on her own with this member of staff and I wasn't allowed to be told what was said. Now to me this is wrong as my daughter is under the age of 16 and she doesn't under stand question and she will say anything. I try my hardest with my daughter but after this I now feel like the session was a waste of time and I am a bad parent. I wont using this service again.

I was very sorry to read that your experience of CAMHS has left you feeling so let down and belittled. Firstly, I would like to extend my sincere apologies and secondly, I would like to reassure you that we take all feedback seriously.

I will pass your posting onto the staff team to ask them to respond. I am sure they will want to encourage you to get in touch to talk about the assessment further should you wish to.

I hope we can do something to ease your situation

Response from Alison Newsham-Kent, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust

Thank you for your feedback, we value and repect your comments.

I was concerned to hear that you felt blamed for your daughter's eating disorder. Within the CAMHS Eating Disorder Team we are very clear that parents are not to blame for their child's eating difficulty and always work to think with parents how they can best be supported to help their child recover. I would be very keen to discuss with you your experience, in order to understand what happend and to then think about what might be the best support for you and your family.

If you would like to contact me to discuss this further please do not hesitate to contact me. Alison Newsham-Kent CAMHS Eating Disorder Team Lead.
