My mother inlaw had out patient appointment at fracture clinic. After x-ray given it was decided that she needed an operation which was going to be performed the next morning. Kept in and put on nil by mouth from midnight 17th june, was still on nil by mouth at 7 pm 18th june before it was decided she was not going to have the operation. Baring in mind she was 81 i found this digraceful, but this was not the end of it. 19th june nil by mouth again until i went up to visit in afternoon and ask them to find out if the op was going to happen as i thought it unfair that this was still happening, doctor said he was going to ring theatre to see if she was going to be fitted in or not, not long after a nurse came back with a cup of tea and piece of cake and said that she was not having the op as they had a lot of emergencies over night. Doctor came back not long after that and said that they was leaving a slot open for an hour and she may be fit in, but then i pointed at the tea and cake and said the nurse had brought it as she was informed the op was not taking place. Doctor looked embarrassed and went away and nothing more was said. Thursday 20th nil by mouth again, family went to visit in afternoon still no op in sight spoke to doctors about unhappiness of treatment and that could someone contact myself to discuss this. recieved phone call 4.45 pm by junior doc, told him of my concerns that she is traumatised by what is happening and that as a family we were distressed and afraid to leave her because of her treatment. Doctor replied that it is very common for a patient to become confused when they have had a trauma happen, i informed him that she was not brought in through A&E and that this was an old break that was not fixing that is why she was there, she came straight from fracture clinic. I then proceeded to tell him about the tea and cake the nurse had brought and his reply was that he was informed that a member of family had given it to her, obviously this had been a discussion between staff as someone had messed up, so instead of owning up they blame the family. To say i was angry is an understatement, and informed him that i would be up the next day 21st june, her birthday. I recieved a telephone call the next day to say that she could go home for the weekend as the operation was not going to happen and that she would have it monday 24th june am. 24th june took her to hospital had discussion with anestatist about dangers of general because of her age and heart etc. Told she could have arm block and that she would discuss it with her colleagues and get back to me, but she did not and when rung the ward i was told she had gone down for the op, later finding out that she had been given general without family consent. more problems occured due to bad care, and she ended up spending 3 months in there and has now had to go to a nursing home, so avoid at all costs .
