"Long wait time in A&E"

I went to A and E with a broken toe. Arrived at 8.30pm and the waiting room was full, I had to sit on the floor. I was told there would be a 2 hour wait. I didn't see a triage nurse and was eventually seen by a doctor around midnight. I was discharged around 1am. Staff were friendly and were obviously doing their best under pressure. I was told that staffing levels drop off after 8pm, which was contributing to the backlog. I would like to know why staff levels drop after 8, and what impact this normally has on patient waiting times?
