"Unknown to me...the visitng time ..."

About: North Manchester General Hospital

(as a relative),

What could be improved

Unknown to me...the visitng time had changed on the ward where my husband was since his last admission. When I turned up at 4pm today(bank holiday Monday) I was told I could only have 5 minutes with him.As my son was picking me up after his shift ended at 6pm that meant I had to hang round for 2 hours until visiting times resumed so I could be with my husband.

I had no choice but to go and sit in the restaurant only to find that it had closed at 1.30pm and was not due to reopen until 11pm tonight.

So I had a choice of sitting in a corridor for 2 hours or pay £10 taxi fare home.I chose the latter. So I have been deprived of seeing my husband just because of one 'jobsworthy' nurse whom I had explained my circumstances to.

Thought 'nurses' were caring people?.

Response from North Manchester General Hospital

We're sorry to hear of your experience. We fully recognise the importance of visiting in boosting patients' spirits, and appreciate the inconvenience which has been caused to you. We introduced standard visiting times for a number of reasons, including helping with infection prevention work and dignity and privacy issues. They are contained in our new visitor code which provides advice to all visitors - more information is available on our website at www.pat.nhs.uk and you should also have had information leaflets on the ward.
